Spring weddings are full of colour, light and new beginnings

There’s something pretty special about a spring wedding.

The days are getting longer, gardens are waking up after winter and suddenly there’s colour everywhere. Blossom starts appearing, trees turn green again and, if you’re lucky, the sun even decides to make an appearance.

As a wedding photographer based in County Durham, spring is one of my favourite times of year to photograph weddings across the North East and North Yorkshire.

And no, you don't need to cross your fingers and hope for glorious sunshine all day. Some of my favourite spring wedding photographs have involved clouds, a bit of rain and everyone grabbing their coats!

Why choose a spring wedding?

One of the biggest advantages of a spring wedding is the combination of fresh colours and beautiful natural light.

The countryside around County Durham, Northumberland and North Yorkshire can look fantastic at this time of year. Trees are coming into leaf, gardens are full of colour and there's a real feeling that everything is starting again.

It's also a great time of year for couples who want plenty of natural photographs outside without necessarily having to deal with the heat of summer.

Beautiful spring light

Spring gives us some lovely opportunities for photographs.

The sun is generally lower than it is in the middle of summer, which can create much softer and more flattering light. Later in the day, we can often make the most of golden-hour light for some relaxed photographs of the two of you.

And because the evenings are getting lighter, there's more flexibility about when we can sneak outside for those photographs without taking you away from your guests for too long.

Spring wedding photographs

Spring gives us plenty to work with:

  • Blossom and flowering trees

  • Fresh green countryside

  • Colourful gardens

  • Outdoor drinks receptions

  • Natural photographs with your guests

  • Beautiful evening light

  • Dramatic skies when the weather does its thing!

I'm not interested in dragging you away from your wedding for hours to create photographs.

I'll take the important group photographs, give you some time together for a few portraits and then get back to capturing what's actually happening.

What if it rains?

It's Britain. It's probably worth having a plan!

The great thing about being an experienced wedding photographer is that I don't need perfect weather to create good photographs.

If it's raining, we'll use the venue, windows, doorways, covered areas and whatever else is available. Sometimes a bit of rain actually adds something to the photographs.

And if there's a break in the weather, we'll grab it.

You don't need to spend your wedding day worrying about the forecast. Leave that to me.

Spring weddings across the North East

I photograph weddings throughout County Durham, Northumberland, Tyne & Wear and North Yorkshire, as well as weddings further afield across the UK.

Whether you're getting married in a country house, barn, hotel, village church or somewhere completely different, spring gives us plenty of opportunities to create a collection of photographs that feels like your wedding rather than a generic set of wedding pictures.
